KBOX Review

KBOX is a smart-home modular home designed by the Phoenix-based design studio, Kaiserworks. Kaierworks’ KBOX project comes in two designs: the KBOX 360, which is 360 sq. ft. in size; and the KBOX 480, which is 480 sq. ft. Both designs include a bedroom, a bathroom, and a living area.

The KBOX modules are designed to be smart-home, plug-and-play solutions. As such, they include all finishes including a set of fully-integrated Bosch appliances. One of the main selling points of a KBOX is its high degree of flexibility when it comes to where you can place your home. According to their website, the simplicity of their modules makes them suitable for a wide variety of environments.

While Kaiserworks (KBOX’s parent company) doesn’t complete any of the necessary site preparations themselves, they do offer project management services. For a percentage of the project’s cost, they can oversee all stages of the project including permitting, finding a local contractor, and overseeing the project’s progress. It is worth noting that to date, KBOX’s homes have not moved out of the conceptual phase.

When purchasing a KBOX, buyers can choose between either of the two models, which are factory-made and arrive fully-finished. Homeowners may also choose to purchase KBOX’s Solar Screen, a UV-resistant mesh that provides an extra layer of insulation.

Strengths:

  • Homes are compact, can serve multiple purposes (vacation homes, permanent residences, etc.), and can be placed virtually anywhere in the US

  • Homes are designed to be plug-and-play solutions, arriving fully finished, insulated, and including appliances

Reasons it may not be for you:

  • You are looking for a larger home (their biggest design is 480 square feet)

  • KBOX only provides a limited set of options, and aside from select upgrades, there is limited room for customization

  • You are looking for a company with a more complete operating history
