Skyline Home Builders Review

Skyline Homes is one of North America’s largest dealers of modular, mobile, and manufactured homes - with a primary focus on manufactured homes built to HUD standards. Based in Elhart, Indiana, Skyline and has been in business for over 70 years. Their company stock is publicly traded on the Nasdaq as Skyline Champion Corporation (SKY). Their online catalog has thousands of pre-designed floor plans, ranging from 399 square feet to 3,000+ square feet, though available designs will vary based on your location.

Homes from Skyline Homes come in a wide variety of styles including ranch, colonial, cape cod, chalet, travel trailers, and park RVs. Exteriors usually feature traditional designs with gable roofs, dormers, horizontal smartside siding, and small porches. Interiors come with more luxury features such as fireplaces, kitchen islands, walk-in pantries, lofts, cabinetry, mirror closets, entertainment centers, and more. Foundation options range from concrete slabs to full basements. Skyline also has experience building 460,000+ mobile homes, most of them travel trailers.

After buyers settle on a design, home modules are manufactured by one of Skyline Homes’ local partners at one of their dozens of North American facilities. Skyline’s quality assurance team completes weekly inspections throughout the process. While the module is being built, a local Skyline retailer works with buyers to obtain permits, prepare the site and foundation, install utility hookups, and even touch up landscaping. Home modules arrive nearly complete at the build site, where they are set on a foundation.

It’s important to note that Skyline Homes is still only a home dealer. Their partners are responsible for manufacturing the home module(s), many of which require no site work. In the event that a home requires site work, it’s up to a local retailer and builder to complete construction and site work though Skyline Homes will guide buyers through the entire process. In addition to the quality assurance program and weekly factory inspections, Skyline’s homes come with a 12-month structural warranty.

Strengths:

  • Boast 70+ years of experience and a publicly traded stock

  • Built over 877,000 homes and 460,000 mobile homes

  • You are looking for a manufactured home, which is often cheaper and requires less site-work than other types of prefab and site-built homes

Reasons they might not be for you:

  • Their primary product offering - manufactured homes, are not eligible for the same type of financing products and do not store value the same way as other types of homes

  • You are seeking a dealer that specializes in modern home styles

  • You want to work with a company that handles all stages of the build including site work
