Clever Homes Review

Clever Homes is a custom prefab and modular home designer and architect. They oversee the planning, permitting, design and build phases of the home building process. They don’t have any pre-designed home layouts but, rather, consult with home buyers to design and build a home that caters to the site as well as to the buyer’s wishes and budget. Clever Homes also specializes in green building techniques and homes are LEED building certifiable.

Clever Homes constructs homes using a variety of building techniques including; modular construction, steel framing, panelized buildings and advanced framing techniques. Notably, Clever Homes doesn’t build the homes themselves. Instead, they have a network of factories and builders throughout the United States which they utilize to manufacture their homes. These include Method Homes, Greenfab, Dvele, and Plant Prefab. Because homes are truly custom, there are no restrictions on home size or added layout features.

Strengths:

  • Custom homes allow for personalized design and the ability to build on non-standard lots (e.g. hills and unique slopes)

  • Homes are designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible

  • Strong network of factories and builders, particularly for the west coast and particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area

Reasons they might not be for you:

  • High priced - all-in home costs starts at around $350/square foot before land

  • You want the same firm to design, manufacture, and build your home

  • You live in an area outside of their traditional network of builders
