CargoHome Review

CargoHome is an Elm Mott, Texas-based designer and manufacturer of container homes and tiny homes. The company currently sells eight different home designs, and offers a variety of interior and exterior customization options including decks. The look of their container homes are often modern and minimalistic.

Their container homes range in size from 160 to 640 sq. ft. This makes them well suited for individuals either looking for a container home or a tiny house. CagoHome’s Flagship and Helm models are two-story homes, with the former consisting of a 40’ shipping container on the ground floor and a 20’ container on the second floor, resulting in a combined living space of 480 sq. ft.

The container homes from CargoHome are sold with insulated stud walls using either spray-foam or regular solid foam. They are fully portable and can be shipped via train, trailer, or specialized trucks, which allows for easy delivery and mobility. From a logistical standpoint, CargoHome also provides delivery services for your home, either delivering the containers themselves or by partnering with other container movers. It is worth noting though, that a local contractor is needed to complete necessary site prep such as laying a foundation and preparing utility connections.

Upon delivery, homes arrive fully finished and often include appliances. However, depending on the degree of furnishing, there may be added costs in addition to the base price. CargoHome requires that 50% of all costs be paid before construction begins, while 25% is paid upon completion of manufacturing and the remaining 25% is paid upon delivery; CargoHome also lists LightStream as a financing partner. If you wish to create your own custom design, there is a $2,500 non-refundable consultation fee.

Strengths:

  • They offer 8 styles and sizes to choose from in addition to the option to create a fully-custom design

  • Homes combine the transportability of a tiny home with the durability of a shipping container house

Reasons they may not be for you:

  • Their pre-designed homes are relatively small compared to options from other container home companies (only up to 640 sqft)

  • You are located far away from their Elm Mott, Texas headquarters and the cost of shipping is cost prohibitive
