Nottoscale Review

Nottoscale is a designer of modular homes and home interiors with offices in San Francisco and Berlin. They build unique, modern designs with a steel “modulome” modular process that cuts down both construction waste and project time. While their homes are fully custom, their designs usually feature a sleek modern look with floor-to-ceiling windows, sliding glass doors, concrete steps, porches, and flat metal roofs with solar paneling. Since Nottoscale also works as an interior designer, their homes often come with their own specialty furniture and fixtures, which tend to take on a modern, Scandinavian style.

From a logistics standpoint, Nottoscale is willing to manage the entire process themselves, from design to build - offering turn-key project management. First, buyers work closely with Nottoscale to turn their vision into building plans. Once the design is complete, Nottoscale sends the plans to a factory to prefabricate their unique “modulomes”, which are steel chassis modules that serve as the frame. Finished modulomes are shipped to the build site, where a building team mounts the modulome chassis to columns on point foundations. Once the chassis is in place, the floor, roof, exterior wall panels, and any interior building units are attached to the frame. Modulomes come with pre-drilled holes to connect them to other modules for stacking and customization. Their raised chassis creates an accessible crawlspace and eliminates the need for large foundation excavations and excessive site work.

Strengths:

  • Experienced architects that offer turn-key project management services

  • Unique prefabrication process via a steel chassis that saves time and creates unique, modern home designs

Reasons they might not be for you:

  • You are not interested in their steel chassis “modulome” prefabrication process and want to work with a designer that specializes in more traditional builds

  • They are outside of your price range
