NOMAD Micro Homes Review

NOMAD Micro Homes is a designer and manufacturer of modular tiny homes based in Vancouver, Canada. They are currently accepting orders for their signature Cube home, plus an add-on studio and guest suite. Limited floor plan customization and modular additions are also available. Their homes feature a sleek modern look, with wide windows, fiberglass doors, plus a galvanized sheet metal and composite wood exterior finish. Inside, their homes have vinyl wood grain flooring, lacquer cabinets, laminate counters, convertible furniture, LED lighting, and loft space. Their signature Cube home is made of 3D-printed insulated steel panels that are resistant to fires, termites, and extreme weather. Homes can be connected to a power grid, a backup generator, or even fitted with off-grid capabilities through solar paneling, rainwater collection systems, and propane generators, and black/grey sewer treatment.

Homes are 3D-printed and manufactured in NOMAD’s Vancouver workshop. Completed home modules are then flat packed and shipped worldwide in a standard shipping container with user-friendly instructions for quick, at-home assembly. NOMAD can pair buyers with a 3rd-party for home assembly, but their flat packs are designed to be assembled by just about anyone, similar to Ikea and other simple DIY kits. While their homes arrive with convertible furniture, homes do not come with large appliances, shower doors, or stairs. It’s also up to buyers to work with a third party contractor to install the foundation, roofing, and utility hookups (electrical and plumbing). NOMAD’s homes are usually set on a concrete pier foundation or a simple 5+ “screw pile” foundation. Homes can also be set on more permanent foundations. All components can usually be assembled over several days without much hassle. However, it’s worth noting that even though their flagship model only weighs about 5,000 pounds, local authorities may still require a conventional foundation and certification by a state-licensed structural engineer.

Strengths:

  • Offer sleek 3D-printed modular homes with off-grid capabilities

  • Homes can be quickly and easily assembled on-site

Reasons they might not be for you:

  • You are looking for a bigger house (their largest model is about 283 square feet)

  • You are looking for a company that handles all phases of the build themselves, including site-work
