Kanga Room Systems Review

Kanga Room Systems is a designer and manufacturer of prefabricated studios, cottages, accessory dwellings (ADUs) and homes based in Waco, Texas. They offer a variety of designs from 80 square foot studios called, “Kwik Rooms” to 1,200 square foot homes. Their designs are grouped into either a cottage or modern style however, buyers have the flexibility to customize design elements on their homes. While Kanga Room Systems cannot build fully custom homes, they can modify existing floor plans to accommodate customer space needs. Additionally, buyers have the flexibility to move around design elements such as windows and doors as well as choose their desired interior finish materials and colors. It is worth noting that Kanga Room Systems offers green building solutions and can incorporate green elements such as solar panels and specialized plumbing on request.

From a logistics standpoint, Kanga Room Systems offers three options for project completion: turn-key, structural shell, and a panelized kit. For projects located within Central Texas (from DFW to San Antonio) they offer turn-key services, meaning that they can assist with permitting, site-work, laying a foundation, manufacturing, installation, and finishing the home. For buyers outside of this area but still located within Texas, Kanga Room Systems can deliver and set the structural shell on the foundation. In these cases, a local builder or contractor would need to finish the interior of the home. The third option customers have is to order the panelized building kit, in which case the frame of the home is shipped in panelized components and it is up to a local builder or contractor to supervise and complete the assembly and completion of the project. While their panelized kits can be shipped across the country, Kanga Room Systems is unable to accommodate projects in locations with especially strict building codes such as Florida’s hurricane resistant building codes or California’s earthquake code.

Strengths:

  • They offer turn-key project services for projects located within Central Texas

  • Design plans are flexible - individuals can customize the finishes and aspects of their floor plan such as doors and windows

  • They are a family owned and operated business and pride themselves on accommodating customer needs

Reasons they might not be for you:

  • You are looking to build a fully-custom home design

  • You are located in an area with building codes stricter than Kanga Room Systems builds (ex. Florida & California)
