Cubist Engineering Review

Cubist Engineering is a designer of prefab homes and ADUs based in Greenwich, New York. They currently only have 1 finished office ADU available for purchase. Cubist Engineering typically doesn’t offer a catalog of pre-designed models but rather they specialize in fully-custom builds.  Cubist Engineering has taken on a range of custom builds in the past, from small commercial spaces to 4,500+ square foot family homes. Cubist’s homes have an extremely modern style, often featuring an angular cube design. Exteriors often feature 3+ inch thick cross-laminated-timber panels, cypress siding, flat roofs covered with weather-proof fiberglass, french doors, and galvanized steel awnings. Their models’ air-tight construction and big Ultrex windows mean additional insulation and heating are rarely required. Interiors frequently include furnishings, fixtures, hand-scraped white-oak flooring, ipe trim, ipe corner shelves, ceramic heaters, wall fans, custom maple cabinetry, LED lighting, water heaters, plus whitewashed CLT walls and ceilings. Luxury upgrades are available including modular decking, roof decking with steel railing, smart home capabilities, and renewable energy packages with mobile solar units.

Once buyers have settled on a design, homes are custom built by Cubist Engineering and can be shipped anywhere in the United States. Homes arrive in a highly finished state, and in some cases are even delivered fully furnished. Their smaller units are built with a hot-dipped galvanized steel sub-frame that can serve as a mobile trailer or a permanent foundation if buyers remove the axles and tongue. Both of these simple foundation options require no site prep, meaning buyers don’t need to work with a third-party contractor to lay a foundation. Cubist Engineering mostly works as a consulting firm, handling the design and engineering needs for clients while their sister company ReclaimCraft usually builds the projects.

Strengths:

  • Build fully custom prefab homes that are delivered in a highly finished state

  • Homes include luxury fixtures, features, and high-quality furniture

  • Their mobile, adjustable foundations eliminate expensive site work and eliminate the hassle of working with a third-party contractor

Reasons they might not be for you:

  • You are looking for a more traditional design and their boxy cube look doesn’t interest you

  • You are working on a limited budget or tight time frame and want a company that offers standard designs
